The Pink Suitcase Sisters...a True Sisterhood

"Have Pink Suitcase, will travel!" That's the motto of the Pink Suticase Sisters, a sisterhood of women travelers out of West Cobb.  This unique group of women was formed so that women who wanted to travel and see the world could do so without having to "go it alone."

Two years ago, travel agent Traci Hildreth was having a conversation with a client who had just returned from Egypt with her husband. They were talking with Traci and the lady mentioned that she had always wanted to go to New York City. Traci thought it was odd that this lady had now been to Egypt, but had never been to NYC. Traci couldn’t leave it alone, she just had to ask the client why she didn’t go. The client replied, “My husband would NEVER go to New York!” Well, Traci wondered, “Why don’t you just go with your girlfriends?” The client responded that she just didn’t have any girlfriends that would feel comfortable going by themselves.

This conversation gave Traci an idea, why not form a women’s group for traveling?  The wheels started turning and Traci emailed another travel agent friend, Kathy Lowery, about the idea. Instead of Kathy emailing her back with her thoughts about this plan, Kathy emailed it to all the ladies on her contact list. Immediately 15 people wanted to join! Traci and Kathy then sat down, ironed out all the details, and scheduled their first Open House Feb 4th 2008 at Bubbalini’s….and the "Pink Suticase Sisters" were born!  They expected around 25 people to show up and were overwhelmed when they had 75 ladies sign in and 68 to join that first night!

Since then, the Pink Suitcase sisters have traveled all over the world and are still going strong…but they are much more than just a travel club. “We are consistently told how much our group has meant to some of these ladies and we have met some great friends that we would have never met, otherwise.”

The Pink Suitcase Sister’s have also sponsored some great causes, including  a camp for cancer kids and their families, for which they raised over $3000. They are also very involved with raising money for the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic, this is a cause near and dear to the Pink Suitcase Sisters because one of their members, Judy Manning, was an original founder of the Pink Ribbon Classic. Another member, Cissy Chastian, was the honored breast cancer survivor at the 2008 Pink Ribbon Classic.  The 2010 Pink Ribbon Classic will mean so much more when they participate this year. “We will work hard to raise money this year in honor of our PS Sister Anne Wieder who died suddenly in December from breast cancer. “ Anne had gone on the last three trips with the Pink Suitcase Sisters and she was very vocal in how much the Pink Suitcase Sisters meant to her.  The sisters raised $1540 for the 2009 Pink Ribbon and have already come close to that amount for the 2010 tournament.

No story about the Pink Suitcase Sisters would be complete without mentioning how much fun they have! They plan trips to destinations all over the world. The PSS organizes the group airfare, hotel and transportation into the city. Once you are there, you can do whatever you wish to do. Once a year, they even plan a trip with the husbands.  Last year, 28 couples and members had the trip of a lifetime in Alaska.

The Pink Suitcase Sisters also host many local events. “We try to help out the local economy.” This year at Christmas, the PSS had a “girl’s night out on the Marietta Square”. The shops opened just for them and they had a couple of hours of shopping and eating snacks that the shops provided.  Afterward, the Marietta Historic Trolley picked them up for a trip to see the Lights of Life. The sisters also periodically host Open Houses where members can bring their friends and potential members can find out what the PSS is all about. The next Open House will be February 25th, 2010 at the Gem City Grill.

Miss Cobb County, Casy Walker, Hosts a Jingle Jog for Autism in Powder Springs

My sister, Casy Walker, Miss Cobb County 2009, is also the Cobb County representative for the Autism Speaks organization. She is devoted to raising awareness for autism and has organized a "Jingle Jog" in Powder Springs to raise money for Autism efforts. Every runner/walker will wear a bell as they jog for the children they support.  What a wonderful and fun way to help out a very worthy cause!

Autism effects 1 in 120 kids in Georgia and in response to this, Jingle Jog will serve to raise money and awareness for their efforts for Autism Speaks and Children’s Miracle Network.  All the proceeds will be divided amongst these organizations. Jingle Jog will be a 3k walk/run in Powder Springs, Ga on the Silver Comet Trails. We will also provide bells for you to wear for every child with autism you want to support.

There is a $25 entry fee to participate, which will include coffee (donated by the 'Daily Grind') upon arrival. There will also be a $40 family option for families over two people.

If you do not desire to race but would like to come out and cheer on our runners or you want to raise money we encourage you to do that as well.

If you are a runner and you feel a desire to donate more than the entry fee, you may think of getting sponsors to donate $10 or $20 for each mile you complete. Jingle Jog will be held on December 12, 2009 at 9am and we will meet at the Silver Comet Trail parking area on Florence Rd (The Florence Trailhead) or you may park at the Park and Ride. (www.silvercometga.com).

If you desire to participate, please respond to this post by email or in the comment section. Or, you can also register the morning of December 12th before the walk, in person.  I hope to see you there!

Introducing Sara Teate: Voice & Piano Lessons

Hello! My name is Sara Teate, and I am a recent Georgia Southern University graduate with a degree in Music Education/Vocal. I currently teach Voice and Piano at the Fine Arts Academy located at McEachern Methodist in Powder Springs. I have been privately teaching for 5 years, and I teach a variety of musical genres. Such as: Classical, Musical Theater, Religious, and Pop music. My teaching philosophy is for my students to understand the musical language and to produce a healthy and relaxed singing voice. I also hope to instill the confidence and love for music that I have! I have been in many Opera and Musical Theater productions such as Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) Sandy (Grease) and Elsa Schrader (Sound of Music). Remembering The Humor of Ronald Reagan

Whether you loved him or hated him for his politics, there's no denying his quick wit and humor. As a child of the 80's, when I think of Ronald Reagan it makes me think of a happier, simpler time. Of course, that may be because I was too young to really understand what was going on in the world!   I came across this video clip the other day and it made me smile. I thought some of you would enjoy it too.

Responsibility Fee?

For those of you who listen to Dave Ramsey, you have to know that he would be shaking his head at this and telling us that we should be cutting up all of our credit cards anyway.  This article in USA Today talks about the latest trend in banking, charging people who don't carry any balance on their credit cards and/or pay them off every month.
These are strange times we're living in.  The next thing you know, we'll be charged extra for paying  bills on time....or perhaps ticketed for going UNDER the speed limit!

Flood Relief

Noonday Association is partnering with Samaritan's Purse and West Ridge Church to have a coordinated response to the Flood Relief in the NW Atlanta.

West Ridge Church will be hosting Samaritan's Purse Disaster Relief Team beginning tomorrow. Sam’s Purse will be bringing a fifty-three foot trailer and four other trailers full of tools and gear to help serve those from our community cleaning up from the flood.

Samaritan's Purse Teams will canvass some of the hardest hit areas beginning tomorrow afternoon. They will assess every project before volunteers go out, and will help organize volunteers and teams.  Churches with volunteer teams are asked to enlist team leaders to supervise the team and have the team leader contact Samaritan’s Purse at 678-202-5974 for assignment.

Sam's Purse will give the contact information of everyone served. If they are not already connected to a church we hope to connect them to one of our congregations one way or another.

Paul Richardson of West Ridge contacted an organization called Gleaning for the World and they are sending 3500 blankets, 300 pairs of shoes and 4 pallets of water. West Ridge will distribute some of this through the Red Cross but if churches need these items to distribute they are welcome to them. It will be first come, first serve.

Here is a summary of the partnership with Samaritan's Purse with phone numbers and e-mail for how your church can get involved; also on Paul Richardson's blog at www.paulrichardsononline.com.
