Blood Donors Urged to Make A Donation Before Vacation

While enjoying summer activities and planning vacations, many people forget that the need for blood donations persists. Donors are needed now to help prevent blood shortages, which commonly occur during the summer months. Start the summer off right. Make a blood donation today before you go on summer vacation.

Summer is traditionally a difficult time for maintaining an adequate blood supply as families leave on vacation. Schools and colleges, which account for nearly 21 percent of the blood supply – are also out on break. Meanwhile, blood usage can often rise due to travel related accidents. Each summer, thousands of patients depend on blood to survive.

Donors are urged to give the gift of life on Monday, May 4, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the following location:

Daily Grind Coffee Shop

3960 Mary Eliza Trace,
Marietta, Georgia 30064

All presenting donors will receive a special gift from the American Red Cross and will be entered in a regional promotion to win a cruise for two. In addition, all participants will receive a Backstage pass to the Vans Warped Tour’s Atlanta Show. And, one lucky participant will receive a ticket to the show!!

The American Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region provides life-saving blood to approximately 120 hospitals and must have 1,200 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive life-saving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given safely every two weeks, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people age 17 and older or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (448-3543) or visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/.

Gano Brand Coffee, A Healthier Alternative

The other day I was at a friend's house and met a really sweet lady, Victoria Buchanan.  She started telling me about Gano brand coffee. I was intrigued, so I asked her to write something about it for West Cobb Life because I knew that many of you (like me) may have never heard about "healthy coffee."  Here's what she had to say:

If you are a coffee drinker, you know you cannot make it through the morning without your caffeine fix. But did you also know that coffee interferes with the absorption of essential minerals and vitamins, hampers the absorption of nutrients, is very acidic and toxic, can raise blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and can raise the stress level of the body by increasing the production of cortisol (a stress hormone)?

Most people, like my husband, love coffee so much that there is virtually no way he would give it up - even at an expense to their health. I love my husband and really want to keep him around so I was ecstatic to find a healthy alternative.

Gano Brand is a delicious and healthy coffee that contains Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi Mushroom) also known as the "King of Herbs" in Chinese medicine for its medicinal qualities and its ability to naturally help improve the body's PH. Cancer and disease grow in a highly acidic environment. It takes 17 CUPS of water to neutralize the acidity of ONE regular cup of coffee and then two more cups of water to offset the dehydration! This fact alone is worth the transition to healthy coffee.

Below are just some of the additional benefits of drinking healthy Ganoderma coffee:

- Strengthens the immune system

- Assists in reducing the unpleasant side effect of chemo and radiation

- Balances blood sugar levels and blood pressure

- Protects against skin cell degeneration, improves skin texture inhibits appearance of aging

- Oxygenates and detoxifies the body

- Increases metabolism, reduces fatigue, boosts energy

- Contains antioxidants that inhibit damaging free radicals

- Relieves sinus congestion and other respiratory problems, and so much more...

Check out all the products that contain the King of Herbs - Ganoderma Lucidum - at www.javalicious1.com . If you would like a free sample, send a request to javalicious1@gmail.com.

"One-Stop Shop" for Job Seekers at Cobb Libraries

The ‘CobbWorks Mobile Career Center,’ a free job resource, will be available March and April at selected Cobb County Library branches in a partnership to make job-hunting tools accessible to community members.

The portable facility is a converted bus filled, not with seats, but with 12 computer stations instead. One can complete an online job search, résumé and a cover letter at the station. The computers also have Internet access via satellite, which allows the opportunity for people to conduct searches for local, state and national jobs.

“The ‘CobbWorks Mobile Career Center’ is an effective way to take workforce development services into neighborhoods where our community members live and work,” CobbWorks Executive Director and CEO, John Helton said.

Professional job counselors from CobbWorks will also be available to assist job-seekers, Helton said. CobbWorks staff can help individuals plan job searches, apply for jobs on-line, create resumes and cover letters and answer career-development questions.

Visitors to the mobile career center can continue their work inside libraries where they can access newspaper classifieds, sign up to use computers in the library, and check out the latest books on job hunting and career management. Services are free at the library and printing is available from computers and copying machines for 10 cents per page.

The career center will be available at the following libraries:

South Cobb in Mableton:                   March 3     9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Central in Marietta:                            March 4     2 – 4 p.m.

Merchant’s Walkin Marietta:               March 17   2 – 4 p.m.

Merchant’s Walk in Marietta:              March 19   2 – 4 p.m.

Stratton in Marietta:                           April 7        9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Before attending the event, participants should keep a few items in mind. Attendees should bring a thumb drive to save their work and a notebook to take notes. Computer usage at the mobile career center is unlimited for the duration of the visit unless there is a line to use the computers.  In that case, customers are limited to one-hour sessions. The bus is wheelchair-accessible.

Services at the CobbWorks Mobile Career Center are provided on a first-come-first-serve basis. Once individuals register in the CobbWorks Web page, a step that can be completed on site, then their search can begin.

For information call CCPLS at 770-528-2318 or CobbWorks at 770-528-4300.
