This summer I decided that I would re-read "Gone With The Wind" because I haven't read it in it's entirety since I was 16 years old. Like most Southern girls, I watched the movie as a child and imagined myself being the beautiful and bold Scarlett O'Hara and I dreamed of being swept away by the brave and dashing Rhett Butler. I even have the movie poster proudly displayed in the rec room in my home and the image of Rhett and Scarlett with Atlanta burning in the background still evokes a strong feeling of wonder and romance mixed with sadness. I've met several non-Southerners (aka: Yankees) that have not read the book or even seen the movie and they don't really understand what all the fuss is about....but I highly recommend reading the book whether you are a Southerner by birth or if you were just smart enough to move here when you got the chance! I'm actually about halfway through the book now and I find it interesting that, as an adult, I have an even greater appreciation for it. I think it's because I can relate to the many different characters, the story, the history, the war, and the great loss even more now than I did when I was younger because of my own life experiences.
So when I came across an advertisement for the Scarlett on the Square Museum and the Star Spangled Scarlett Weekend I was, of course, intrigued! I contacted Connie Sutherland at the Museum to find out more information. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town over the holiday weekend....but I wanted to pass this information along to all of you who may be GWTW fans as well. There are so many things going on including a trivia breakfast at the Marietta Country Club, an auction of memoribilia, a 1940's Hollywood Canteen inspired dance in the ballroom at the HIlton, a fashion show, the Rhett Butler Show Truck, and to top it all off.....appearances by 5 of the original cast members from the movie! Click here for a complete description of all of the weekend events. The 3 day event begins July 4th and you can find out how to purchase tickets to all or some of the events by contacting Connie Sutherland at 770-794-5145 or email Csutherland@mariettaga.gov. Reservations are now being accepted. You can also find more information on their website gwtwmarietta.com.
