A lesson to be learned from typing the wrong email address!

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier.

Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston , a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack.

The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted.  The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived
Date: January 16, 2008

I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones.  I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow.  Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. Sure is hot down here!

Randy Travis at The Mable House

Randy TravisWhen I found out Randy Travis was going to be at The Mable House right here in Cobb County I couldn't believe it.  When I was in high school Randy Travis was my FAVORITE country music singer.  Yes, I was teased mercilessly for liking country music in the late 80's when Duran Duran and MC Hammer were all the rage.  But I didn't care, I hung my poster of Randy Travis right next to my Beatles posters in my atypical teenage room  (I loved all kinds of music and still do).

When I was 17, I went to Nashville Tennessee with my boyfriend (who now happens to be my husband!) to visit his mother.  She had a friend who had actually worked with Randy Travis and knew where his house was......and better than that, he said he would drive us by THE home of Randy Randy Travis, Autographed Photo from 1989Travis!  I was in heaven!

We actually only saw a gate leading to a long driveway, but it was still so exciting.  I wrote Mr. Travis a note about how much I liked him and his music along with my address and phone number (crazy I know) and tied it to his mailbox with a pony-tail holder.  And guess what????  He actually wrote to me and sent me this autographed photograph from a trip to Cairo, Egypt!  (Yes, I still have this cherished picture after all these years!)

It's pretty amazing that The Mable House has such a great line-up this year.  I wish I could make it to the concert, but I won't be able to.  Oh well, I'll have to see my old "pal" the next time he comes to town!

The Concert is May 30 at 8:00PM.  Click here for more information and tickets.

Artsies Quilts Make Great Gifts

Red Artsies Photo QuiltI was the "room mom" in my daughter's class this year and when it came time to give an end-of-the-year gift I wanted it to be very special because her teachers are so special.  When I did an interview with Paige DeFreece of Artsies I saw her photo-quilts and I knew that it would be the perfect gift for these wonderful women.

All of the moms collaborated over the last couple of months to gather pictures for the quilt.  And Paige did such a fabulous job putting them together.  She even made a pillow for the speech therapist!  They turned out so beautifully.  When I went to Swoozies at the Avenue to buy boxes and gift wrap for them, all of the women in the store were going crazy over Pink Artsies Photo Quiltthe quilts and asking where we got them.

On the back, Paige sewed a panel that contained all of the students' names and this poem:

WHOSE CHILD IS THIS?
Author Unknown

"Whose child is this?" I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play
"Mine", said the parent with a tender smile
"Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should."

"Whose child is this?" I asked again
As the door opened and someone came in
"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile
"Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind
To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school."

"Whose child is this?" I ask once more
Just as the little one entered the door
"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled
And each took the hand of the little child
"Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever."

My daughter's teachers truly loved these special quilts and it made all of us so happy to be able to give them something they will cherish!

Why Should I join Yoga?

Breathing techniques combined with systematic movement allow the mind to focus more intently, muscles to contract more deeply which builds strength, stamina and releases stress from your body.  When you are better able to release stress you are physically less vulnerable to illness and emotionally more stable and happy.

Search for GA families who lost soldiers in Afghanistan or Iraq

"Art from the Heart" is a group of professional artists who are doing oil portraits of fallen soldiers and giving them to the soldiers' families.  The portraits and frames are entirely free.  The artists have already painted more than 50 portraits and hope to do every fallen GA soldier, now well over 150.

These large portraits are outstanding.  I saw about a dozen of the paintings, and met four of the artists, at church last Sunday.  This is a solid, entirely volunteer effort with no political strings attached.  Several businesses are underwriting frames, canvas and shipping.  Some volunteer contributions are helping with paint.  The artists work for free.

Out of respect, the artists will not contact the families, they rely entirely on references that lead the families, or a family advisor or friend, to contact them.  The individual artist then meets with the family, gets photographs to paint from, and learns about the personality of the soldier so that the portrait can accurately reflect his or her style and manner.

Thus, this post......Do you know a family of a fallen soldier?  We need to get this wonderful gift to all deserving Georgia families.  If you can help connect a family to these artists, please make your contacts directly through their website:   www.atlantafineartsleague.org/ ......then, click on the "projects" tab on the left side of the screen, and then on the artist's pallet for details

Have a proud Memorial Day.

A Poem for Memorial Day

Unmarked graves with US FlagFreedom Is Not Free
By: Kelly Strong

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of TAPS one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

May 26 - Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a holiday that commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country.  I urge you to not only pause to remember those men and women who have fallen, but also those who currently serve.  Many of them are serving far from loved ones and are in very dangerous situations that they would not choose, but are doing so out of both honor and a sense of duty to their country.  Please pray for their safety.

Last day of school - Start of a great summer!

As I watched the kids get on the bus this morning, I will admit to a bit of a weepy moment. Seeing them head off for the last day of fourth grade made me realize that over the summer they will grow and change and in the fall, we will be faced with more grown up fifth graders. While I was a bit sad about the last day of school, the kids were jubilant. They are all excited about their prospects for the summer. They are also excited about Camp DOYAWANNACOOK. Part of our mission at Entree Vous is to include the enitre family in the meal experience. By giving kids the skills to create meals themselves, it improves their self esteem, encourages their willingness to try new foods and makes them appreciate the ritual of sharing a family meal.

We are proud of the program that we have created to get kids cooking over the summer. This camp is designed for kids from ages 8-13 who have an interest in learning some new skills and having a rollicking good time doing it. Each day has a different theme that correlates with the skills that will be learmed. Each day campers will make a dish to take home for the entire family to enjoy. With the exception of Wed. We are working with the Cobb Center for Family Resources to help open kids eyes about the importance of giving back to the community. On that day, our camp will make an entree to be donated to the CFR. During the week, we will be learning how to plan, prepare , host and clean up a party. Parents will be invited in on Friday for the fun. The cost of the camp is $ 50 per day or $225 for the entire week. Dates are June 14 - 18 from 1:30 to 4:30. For reservations call Entree Vous at 678-354-5221. Your kids are sure to enjoy it and you are sure to enjoy their results. It is going to be a great summer !

David Cook Wins American Idol

First, I'll admit to being an American Idol junkie....aside from it being one of the few television shows we can watch on TV with our kids, I also have a music ed degree and I love to armchair-judge every Tuesday night!   I have to tell you that I was neutral about David Cook in the beginning of this season of American Idol, but that all changed when I heard him sing Lionel Richie's "Hello".

The other "David".... David Archuletta,  is also such an amazing vocalist and performer.  He brought tears to my eyes with "Imagine" the first time he sang it.

To make the night even more exciting, my 5th grade daughter and our neighbor's son have had a season-long "bet" between Archuletta and Cook.  Imagine how excited they were when the two were matched in the final......

After Tuesday night I thought it was an even draw and both deserved to win. However, on Wednesday when Cook's name was announced we clapped and cheered because Cook was our pick.  But my daughter was the most excited and shouted "YESSSS!!!!! I win!"   The winnings?..... a "nice" mechanical pencil, a notebook, and bragging rights for a year!

Banks and Interest Rates

In an article in May's issue of "Smart Money" magazine , they highlighted Price Optimization, which is just a bigger mouthful for "make you pay more for your credit".

They cite an example of a 785 credit score fully documenting home loan customer who applied for a mortgage at the largest  nationwide bank and was offered a rate of 6.25% on his fixed home loan, where other places he checked were coming in at 5.8%-6.2%. A financial analyst in the article stated that this may have been due to "price optimization" where a computer figures out how much you may be wiling to pay for your interest rate. This is based upon facts such as demographics, loyal branch customers, or ethnicity. Why? It is suggested that it is due to the sagging bottom line affected by losses and this is a quick way to boost thier profits.

Lesson learned...SHOP SHOP SHOP... and visit your mortgage broker at www.newloanteam.com . As a broker we have access to all of the big banks rates as well as smaller banks and private money, and offer great wholesale rates. Why be locked into just one banks price? You can check our rates at www.newloanteam.com as they are updated daily! We would be glad to let you know what your going rate is (no bait and switch attached) even if you are already in the process with another lender. We like to shop ourselves, so we are glad to help you with your mortgage shopping quest!

The Kindness of Neighbors

I have been so amazed and inspired by the kindness our community has shown my family this week.  There have been so many people praying for them and offering to help in any way.....it makes me so glad that we live in a community of such generous people!

Most people that know me or read my blogs know that I'm not a great cook, and we've had kind neighbors and friends bringing us food.  With all these extra people at my house it has been extremely helpful.  Just last night, Debbie at Entree Vous sent us home with some wonderful entrees and sides.  (Thank you, Debbie!)  My family was amazed at how delicious it was, they knew then that I didn't really cook it!

Thank you to all of you that are praying and have offered to help.  Janet Huffman at A Cup of The Word has even offered to help replace Bibles lost in the fire.  What a blessing!

My parents and sister are doing okay and the emotions seem to have settled somewhat, now it is just a matter of tackling the difficult work ahead of them.  However, we have been truly blessed by the generosity and kindness of people in our community.

My Parent's Home in Powder Springs Burned

This past Saturday afternoon I got a frightening call from my parents' neighbor....my parent's house was on fire.  As I rushed over there I wasn't sure if everyone was okay or not, I've never been more scared in my life!

Thankfully, everyone in my family was safe and sound.  It was actually a miracle the way the events lined up to cause my parents and sister to be away from the house at the time of the fire.  We are so thankful to God for their safety.

There was an off duty Marietta Firefighter who came to the scene first after the neighbors called 911 and he was able to break down the door and save the family dog, Buddy.  Buddy was a little singed and sooty but he is going to be okay.  Thank you to all the Cobb County Firefighters who were so brave and put out the fire!

The fire was devastating......the family home and most everything in it was destroyed.  We know it was just "stuff" and can be replaced, but my parents have a difficult road ahead of them for the next few months.  Please keep my parents and my sister, Casy in your prayers.

Why Women Talk More Than Men

Funny Husband and WifeA husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day........30,000 to a man's 15,000.
The wife replied, "The reason must be because we always have to repeat everything to men."

The husband then turned to his wife and asked, "What?"

Crowns or Veneers?

What are veneers?  Veneers are eggshell-thin porcelain facings that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. Once bonded in place, veneers are remarkably strong and lifelike in appearance. Veneers are less susceptible to staining and chipping and last many years.

What are crowns?  Crowns are complete coverings for teeth that can be used to strengthen teeth with large cavities or fillings. Crowns can be made of different materials, including gold and porcelain. Porcelain crowns can also improve the color, shape, and position of teeth when a veneer is not possible. Crowns last many years and can be made to look remarkably lifelike.

What do veneers and crowns look like?  The photos below show one of our patients treated with a combination of two veneers and six crowns. Can you tell which is which? Answer: the two front teeth are veneers, the others are crowns. The back molars were not treated.

I love my church!!

Pastor John, or PJ as he is affectionately called, is backed by an amazing team of co-pastors. I have learned so much, grown deeper in my faith, and forged some great friendships there. Ten Things I Learned From My Preschooler's Field Day

Boy RunningRemember Field Day in Elementary school?  Well, my preschooler had Field Day today at her school and it was a lot of fun (even though it was cold and windy). I did, however, learn a few things that I thought I should pass along for anyone who may have a field day coming up.....

#1 - Field Day game rules really don't apply to preschoolers, and if you insist that they do apply, well...good luck!.

#2 - Don't try to play a game that involves a hundred small foam disks in 40mph winds.

#3 - Make sure the baseball bats at the "Dizzy" game are made out of plastic!!!!

#4 - Don't try to play water games when the temperature is below 60 degrees  BRRR!

#5 - It doesn't really matter what order you do the obstacle course, as long as you knock over all the obstacles and manage not to run into your team-mates running the opposite way. (I think there's a life lesson in there somewhere).

#6 - Hula-hoops make beautiful necklaces.

#7 - Water noodles make excellent javelins.

#8 - It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, it's making sure nobody gets a black eye from the frisbee toss that matters.

#9 - Getting preschoolers from one Field Day event to another is like trying to herd cats.

#10 - The parents and teachers end up getting more exercise than the kids!

Feel free to add more from your own Field Day experiences! :)

Classic Mother's Day Video from Anita Renfroe

This is one of my all time favorite videos on You Tube from Anita Renfroe, the Christian comedian and singer.

As a daughter who used to roll my eyes when my mom said all of these things, I now find myself saying the same exact things about 100 times a day!  The truth is funny sometimes!

This is for all the moms (and anyone who ever had a mom!):

May 6th cases in District 1, northwest Cobb

The Planning Commission met May 6th with the following results in District 1.  More complete results will be available in the official minutes which will, of course, govern.  The cases, unless held or continued to our next meeting, proceed to the Board of Commissioners for final decision at their May 20th meeting.

 NEW CASES
z-19 and SLUP 4 (special land use permit) to rezone 4.77 acres located on the east side of Dallas Acworth Highway (92), south of US Highway 41.  Present zoning R-30, proposed zoning O&I (Office Institutional) for a Climate Controlled Self Service Storage facility and offices.  Future Land Use Plan = Rural Residential.

-  withdrawn by the applicant

-  County staff recommended denial, neighbors were opposed.

-  property is located outside of the designated commercial area and is in a Rural Residential Land Use Category

LUP 13 - a land use permit to allow student vehicle parking on 12.924 acres located on the south side of Due West Road, west of Carl Ridge Drive (across from Harrison High School).  Present zoning of R30 would not change.  Future Land Use = Very Low Density Residential.

-  student parking use will terminate permanently at the end of this school year (May 23rd), allowing the families involved time to find alternatives for next year.

-  On staff recommendation, the commission approved the application for the remaining 17 day period in this school year, rather than denying the application outright.  This allowed the board to attach stipulations prohibiting future permits, and enforcement of safety issues.

-  transportation/parking for after school activities, while desirable, should be handled by the School Board, not by zoning commercial parking operations in residential areas.

CASES FROM LAST MEETING
- none

Communicating with County Zoning:

To be in the public hearing record, letters of support or opposition must be received in the zoning office by noon on the Wednesday prior to the Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners' public meetings. Materials received in time are placed in the case file as part of the public record. Materials that arrive too late for the Planning Commission Meeting will be added to the public case file before the Board of Commissioners meeting.

Email letters are acceptable.

The County Staff may not routinely copy and distribute copies of all zoning or variance related letters and email received by the Zoning Division to the Planning Commissioners or to the Board of Commissioners. If you want to be sure and address the Commissions you should address your letters and email to the appropriate Commissioners..

Please send a copy to the Zoning Division for the public file.

The public is invited to present their opinions at both public meetings. Additional materials, letters, petitions, etc can also be entered into the official record at the public hearings.

Of course, I will be glad to receive your suggestions at any time.

The final decision on all zoning cases is made by the Board of Commissioners at their next public zoning meeting. The vote of the Planning Commission represents a recommendation to the BOC. The Planning Commission also develops many of the "stipulations", with the help of staff, that go on to become part of the BOC's final vote.

The final decision on Variance Cases is made by the Planning Commissioners sitting as the Board of Zoning Appeals, with certain exceptions where the Board Of Commissioners has reserved the final decision.

Many people looking for one or multiple vanities, fireplaces and table tops find our bone yard to be quite bountiful.  The selections range through many color scales as well as types of natural stone; including Granite, Marble,  Limestone, Travertine and Onyx. Our pricing starts at $25.00 per square foot for material and fabrication. Make Mothers Day a Special Event at Entree Vous

Entree Vous Breakfast FrittataIt seems that we are always running around getting things done. Between work, school and everything else no one has time for anything anymore. Did you know that because of the families time crunched schedules only 25% of Moms teach their kids to cook?

Entree Vous West Cobb is sponsoring a Mother's Day Event that will bring your family  together and reignite the fading cooking heritage...
YOU ARE INVITED!

On May 3rd and 10th Entree Vous is holding a special Mothers Day Event. Go online to www.entreevous.com and register for a special 11:00 session. Come in with your kids to create one (or more) entrees  and enjoy your day!

Featured on the menu this month is a delicious Good Morning Frittata that would make a wonderful Mothers Day breakfast in bed. To celebrate this special day we are serving warm gooey cinnamon rolls for each session. Children can make a card for Mom ( or Grandma, sisters and aunts!)   Moms will be treated to flowers, and by attending you will be eligible for door prizes from free entrees to spa gift certificates.

Our friends at Sanda Gane Day SPa, KA Kelley, The Daily Grind,  and Lucky Nails are all giving do Weor prizes for this event. So make Mothers Day special this year by giving the gift of time with your family - and great food! What Mother would not appreciate that ?

Sweet Home Alabama, Russian Style!

This video is just too bizarre and so funny, I had to share it!

In the days of the former Soviet Union, the Soviet Red Army had an official all male choir. Even though the Soviet Union no longer exists, the Red Army Choir still performs throughout Russia. This video is from a concert of the Leningrad Cowboys (a very strange group to say the least). They invited the Red Army choir to sing with them on a rendition of a song we in the South all know and love....."Sweet Home Alabama." Trust me, you've never heard it quite like this!

The Oak Ridge Boys at The Mable House

The Oak Ridge BoysWhen I heard the Oak Ridge Boys were coming to The Mable House, I found myself thinking back fondly to many hours spent at the skating rink in the 80's going round and round and singing at the top of my lungs to "Elvira!"   (Come on, you know you all did the same thing...)

Well, the Oak Ridge Boys are still singing their famous 4 part harmony with classics like "Elvira" as well as "Fancy Free" and "Bobbie Sue" and they are kicking off the fantastic Summer Series tonight at The Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre at 8 p.m.

Tickets for individual shows range from $20 to $45. Tables directly in front of the stage, that seat four, are available for $300 per show.  For more information or to buy tickets, call the box office at 770-819-7765 or visit mablehouse.org.

What is Bonding?

Bonding is the use of tooth-colored material to change the shape and color of teeth. Gaps between teeth can often be closed with bonding as well. Bonding lasts several years and can often be done in one visit but is more susceptible to staining and chipping
