The Cobb County Public Libraries’ ‘Big Bug Bash’ will be held Aug. 9, 10 a.m.–noon at the Central CCPL in Marietta for children ages 11 and younger. The event is free and open to the public.
The children’s Big Bug Bash social is the culmination of the summer-long reading program, ‘Catch the Reading Bug.’
CCPL Program Coordinator Patty Latch said that the all-volunteer support club, Friends of the Library, sponsor this celebration, and that throwing the bash is a way of congratulating children and parents for participating in summer reading.
Events at the bash include a demonstration by the Jazz Baptiste Productions dance team; Puppeteer Norma Hornack, along with her puppet troupe ‘Norma’s Neighbors,’ will present children’s folktales; Additionally, a firetruck from the city of Marietta will be on display. Other activities such as face painting, water balloon games and crafts will be available.
“Early interest in the [reading] program has been high,” Latch said, “so we anticipate a crowd.”
Big Bug Bash events will take place both inside of the library and outside of the library near Roswell Street.
Children attending the bash must be accompanied by an adult. For information call (770) 528-2342.
For more great events from our Cobb County Library System, pleast visit our calendar.
This reading program is made possible by funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under provision of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the University System of Georgia. The Big Bug Bash and prizes given during the bash are made possible by the Friends of the Library. The Friends of the Library are made up of citizens who help enrich the growth and development of the CCPL system through fund raising, library promotion, programs, and volunteering.

I had several people contact me yesterday wondering where this week's Mystery Photo was. I should have posted earlier that I am putting it on hold for a little while. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be pretty busy with getting the kids ready for school to start, so I decided to put off the Mystery Photo game until I have more time for it.
I'm glad to know that you all are having fun trying to figure out the Mystery Photos!

I try not to discuss politics on this site, but I just had to post the link to this fantastic article I read yesterday by Gerard Baker. It is an extremely well written satire about Obama's journey to the Middle East and Europe. No matter where you are on the political spectrum, I'm sure you will appreciate this!

Do you recognize it now? It is the Northwest Cobb YMCA at the corner of Stilesboro and Mars Hill Road!
Well, actually, nobody was able to solve the mystery photo this week, so I have randomly chosen a winner from the list of subscribers and I will announce the winner later.
Many people thought it was some sort of water or gas tank like the ones in Austell, and it did kind of look like that because of the way the picture was cropped. I thought it was pretty funny that so many people are members of the YMCA but no one recognized it!
By the way, the hint "There are plenty of people here but it is not a village," was in reference to the song "YMCA" by The Village People. :)

Earlier this week I recieved this message from one of our readers and I wanted to pass it on to all of you:
"I just picked 2 gallons of beautiful blueberries today at the U Pick on Moon Rd. (just off Florence Rd.) in Powder Springs for ONLY $5/gallon!! It's a kid-friendly place owned by the Cook family that lives across the street from the field for the last 30 years. With the recent rain, the berries are huge and juicy and plentiful. Mr. Cook says that he thinks they'll keep producing for about 2 - 3 more weeks, he opened July 5. It's best to go early in the morning before it gets too hot and use bug spray. He provides the buckets for picking and bags to take them home. When you get your berries home, spread them out and allow them to ripen a day for the best flavor and then store them unrinsed in the fridge. They freeze well too, I rinse them and pat dry and put them in ziploc freezer bags. The frozen berries are great in smoothies and to make pies, cobblers, and dump cake!"
My husband and daughter went to check it out yesterday morning and they had so much fun! They came back with a gallon of blueberries that are absolutely delicious. It's amazing that they are only $5 a gallon because $5 at the grocery store barely buys a pint. He said that you should definitley go early in the morning because it got hot fast, but it's worth it to have all those sweet, yummy blueberries!

With airline prices soaring and gas prices near $4 a gallon, many people are forgoing traditional summer trips and choosing to stay at home. But don’t worry; there are plenty of fun things to do right here in our home town! Here are a few tips and ideas for planning the perfect West Cobb Staycation:
- Spend a day at Stone Mountain Park and stay for a picnic on the lawn and watch the Laser Show.
- Be creative….the possibilities are endless!
Here are a few tips to keep in mind for your Staycation:
- Set a start and end date so it feels more like a “real” vacation.
- Don’t work or worry about chores! This is your time off, don’t be tempted to run errands or do chores around the house. Let your co-workers know that you are on vacation.
- Set a budget. Even though you’re saving money on gas and hotels, be careful not to “splurge” so much that you end up going in debt for the staycation. The whole point is to save money.
- Take photos just like you would on a real vacation and make a scrapbook or photo album.

Congratulations to Martha Joyce of Powder Springs! She solved the photo mystery and will win free teeth bleaching from Mark Caceres, DMD!
The photo was taken at the corner of Old 41 and Church St - Bells Ferry in the former town of Elizabeth, Georgia, which is now a part of Marietta. It is located at the Kemira plant.
I believe this was probably the most difficult photo mystery yet. Martha said that the hint on Wednesday helped her out because she remembered recently reading something about Cobb's former towns and Elizabeth, Georgia was on the list. She and her son drove around the old town of Elizabeth looking up and searching for the tower and they were so excited when they saw it! How fun!

Reverend Paul Kumar, from Powder Springs, is scheduled for a book signing at A Cup of The Word bookstore on July 19 from 11:00am-1:00pm. His latest book, "Life's Chosen Angel" will be available at the signing.
"Life's Chosen Angel" is a tribute to Paul and Minnie's late son, Victor. Victor was a friend of mine and he and his wife, Jenny, were our Sunday School leaders for a while. He passed away last year and would have been 38 this month. Rev. Paul Kumar's newest book deals with the reality of death and losing a loved one, and what the Scripture has to tell us regarding it.
The Village at Old Trace Shopping Center will be hosting many events during the day on Saturday, July 19, including "Braves Around Town," moon slides, food, giveaways, pet adoptions and much more! I will post more about this event during the next week.

The first person to email the correct answer will win a fabulous prize from my own personal dentist, Mark Caceres, DMD of Powder Springs. The lucky winner will receive complimentary teeth bleaching, a $100-$200 value! (The winner will just need to call and set up an appointment at no cost to make sure there is no obvious decay or other problems before they start.)

Hello everyone! I am reporting in from Hilton Head Island. It has been so pretty here and I hope all is well back home in West Cobb. My mom is staying with my puppies at our house and she says it has been nice there too.
We are staying with another family that has three young children....add that to our two and it is one wild ride! But it has been a lot of fun and I have some new freckles to show for it even though I've been going through about 2 bottles of sunscreen a day......I think I need to buy stock in Coppertone. I can't believe I used to actually TRY to get a tan! (Which was quite pointless due to my fair skin.) I have to admit, I am more of a "mountain" person, but it has been a lot of fun being here on the Island with friends and also getting to visit with my sister who lives here with her family.
Anyway, I wanted to let you all know that while I may not be blogging as much while I'm here, I am still going to be posting the West Cobb Mystery Photo. The prize for this coming week is fabulous. My dentist, Mark Caceres of Powder Springs, is providing complimentary teeth bleaching....a value of between $100-$200!
So be sure to tune in tomorrow to see if you can guess the Mystery Photo!

My family and I left on Wednesday to come to Hilton Head Island and while I fully intended to keep blogging every day while we were down here...it hasn't happened.
I am hoping that I will have more time next week but, if not, you know the reason why!
As far as the Mystery Photo Game, this was a tough one this week but it was a lot of fun to read some of the answers from everyone! Some people thought it was from a train, some thought it was an old fashioned camera, and others got very close with the guess of an old fashioned gas pump but couldn't place the location. It was one of those kind of things that you will clearly recognize when you know the answer. So stay tuned, I will announce the answer and the winner later today!

If you think the only fireworks you’ll see over the July 4th weekend in Marietta will be in the sky…think again!
The Marietta Gone With the Wind Museum, Scarlett on the Square will have a few fireworks of their own with this year’s main event known as A Star-Spangled Scarlett Weekend.
Joining the festivities will be five of the cast members from the world’s most famous movie, and it will be the first time since 1989’s 50th anniversary of Gone With the Wind at the Fox Theatre that they have been together in the same location. On hand for the celebration will be Fred Crane (Brent Tarleton), Ann Rutherford (Carreen O’Hara), Mickey Kuhn (Beau Wilkes), Cammie King Conlon (Bonnie Blue Butler), and Patrick Curtis (Baby Beau).
The three-day event begins on Friday July 4th with the five Gone With the Wind stars cruising along the parade route in Marietta’s Annual “Let Freedom Ring” Fourth of July Parade. They plan to do it in style by waving to the crowd from the brand new Marietta Trolley. Following the parade, they will take their places at the museum to sign autographs for the fans. The Rhett Butler Show Truck, owned by Rhett and Lynn Butler from River Falls, Alabama, will make another appearance along the Whitlock Avenue side of the museum. If you missed the opportunity to see the famous 18-wheeler show truck in 2005, you will not want to miss it this year. Cameras are suggested, as artist Wes Hardin’s Gone With the Wind paintings on the truck body are not to be believed. You will feel as if “Rhett” and “Scarlett” are about to step down from their places and come to life. Driver of the truck, Larry Weaver, will also join the Butler’s in Marietta for the second time.
Saturday, July 5th will be brimming with things to do, so be sure to mark your calendars. Beginning Saturday morning from 9:30-noon, enjoy a breakfast buffet at the Marietta Country Club as you participate in our special “Star-Struck” team trivia contest with the cast members. You will be able to hear from the horses mouth (well, the actor’s mouth) the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about each question while enjoying a delicious southern breakfast. Back at the museum, tables will be set up for a “GWTW Swap Meet” so if you have Gone With the Wind items you want to swap or sell, or if you just want to purchase items, that’s the place to be. Anyone interested in a table (no charge) should call Christy Hopper at 770-794-5576 to reserve. The swap-meet will take place from approximately 12:30- 1:45 p.m. and then everyone will want to go home and get dressed for the biggest event of the weekend—
“Dancing With the Stars & Stripes.” Join us for an evening of dining and dancing in the ballroom of the Hilton Atlanta-Marietta Conference Center & Hotel for an evening in the 1940’s. With the ballroom decorated in Hollywood Canteen style, special guests will participate in a salute to our military forces and service organizations. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m., with a reception at 5:30, dinner at 6:30, and the program at 8:00. At the end of the program, everyone is invited to take to the dance floor to the big band songs of the 40’s from the Society Express Band. Professional ballroom dancers will be on hand to “show you how it’s done” while ‘cigarette girls’ pass out commemorative souvenirs to all ticket holders. 1940’s dress is encouraged, but black tie or dress casual is also fine. A cash bar will be available throughout the evening.
We wrap up a fabulous weekend on Sunday, July 6th at the beautiful Murray Arts Center beginning at 11:00 a.m. with “I’m Ready for My Closeup..” where you will pose in front of a backdrop with the cast members for an instant photo. “Going Once, Going Twice” silent and live auctions will follow with items donated by Gone With the Wind collector, Dr. Chris Sullivan, Rhett Butler Trucking, and the cast members, as well as donations from other GWTW collectors. Then, get your costumes ready for “Hey, Look Me Over,” a fashion show that will see our contestants one at time, parade past the judges (our special guests) to vie for a prize for best costume. The day couldn’t end without something extraordinary, so attendees should plan on the perfect ending to a perfect weekend!
The cost for the 3-day weekend event is $150 per person. This includes all activities for all three days. Those who do not wish to attend all functions may purchase individual tickets for each day’s activities. Individual prices are: $25 for autograph session and personal museum tour, $35 for “Star-Struck,” and $125 for “Dancing With the Stars & Stripes.” There is no charge for Sunday’s activities other than a charge of $10 for the photo booth. This only applies to individual ticket purchases.
Door prize drawings will take place throughout the weekend. Rhett & Scarlet will make an appearance, and special commemorative souvenirs will be provided to all ticket holders for the Saturday dinner-dance.
For information regarding this event, please contact Connie Sutherland at 770-794-5145 or email Csutherland@mariettaga.gov. Reservations are now being accepted. Our website is: www.gwtwmarietta.com
Note: Any costs for photographs or autographs at signing are determined by cast members and do not benefit the museum.

This summer I decided that I would re-read "Gone With The Wind" because I haven't read it in it's entirety since I was 16 years old. Like most Southern girls, I watched the movie as a child and imagined myself being the beautiful and bold Scarlett O'Hara and I dreamed of being swept away by the brave and dashing Rhett Butler. I even have the movie poster proudly displayed in the rec room in my home and the image of Rhett and Scarlett with Atlanta burning in the background still evokes a strong feeling of wonder and romance mixed with sadness.
I've met several non-Southerners (aka: Yankees) that have not read the book or even seen the movie and they don't really understand what all the fuss is about....but I highly recommend reading the book whether you are a Southerner by birth or if you were just smart enough to move here when you got the chance! I'm actually about halfway through the book now and I find it interesting that, as an adult, I have an even greater appreciation for it. I think it's because I can relate to the many different characters, the story, the history, the war, and the great loss even more now than I did when I was younger because of my own life experiences.
So when I came across an advertisement for the Scarlett on the Square Museum and the Star Spangled Scarlett Weekend I was, of course, intrigued! I contacted Connie Sutherland at the Museum to find out more information. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town over the holiday weekend....but I wanted to pass this information along to all of you who may be GWTW fans as well. There are so many things going on including a trivia breakfast at the Marietta Country Club, an auction of memoribilia, a 1940's Hollywood Canteen inspired dance in the ballroom at the HIlton, a fashion show, the Rhett Butler Show Truck, and to top it all off.....appearances by 5 of the original cast members from the movie! Click here for a complete description of all of the weekend events.
The 3 day event begins July 4th and you can find out how to purchase tickets to all or some of the events by contacting Connie Sutherland at 770-794-5145 or email Csutherland@mariettaga.gov. Reservations are now being accepted. You can also find more information on their website gwtwmarietta.com.
Also, be sure to look for the GWTW cast members on the new Marietta Trolley in Marietta's Annual "Let Freedom Ring" Fourth of July Parade!
Ann Rutherford as Carreen O'Hara Fred Crane as Brent Tarleton
Mickey Kuhn as Beau Wilkes
Patrick Curtis as Baby Beau Cammie King Conlon as Bonnie Blue Butler

McEachern UMC in Powder Springs has both a traditional service and a contemporary service. The Transformation band provides the praise and worship music for the contemporary service. They are really great and they've been together now for many years. They are all accomplished musicians who love the Lord!
The Transformation Band has submitted a video to J93.3 in a contest for the best praise band. The prize is $10,000 in sound equipment for the church!
Leave a comment to "vote" for the band. The more comments a band receives, the more likely they are to make the first cut.
I hope you enjoy the video!
