Last Tuesday my husband and I decided to brave the lines and vote early at Boots Ward. I have to admit that part of me wanted to wait until election day simply because of the excitement of voting and finding out the same evening who won, and the patriotic feeling of voting on the traditional day along with the rest of the country. But my practical side won out in the end and I went to the polls while the kids were in school so at least I wouldn't have to get a babysitter. In the past I've participated in early voting at Boots Ward and it has never taken longer than ten or fifteen minutes...not this time! There was a line out the door and when we finally reached the door it said that the wait from that point was estimated at one and a half hours! The entire gym was filled with lines that looped around and around with people waiting to cast their ballot in this historic election. Overall it took us just over two hours. Several of our friends reported waiting much longer toward the end of the week, some up to four hours. I can only imagine how crazy it will be tomorrow on the "big day."
If you are voting tomorrow I have a bit of advice for you. If you don't have a friend or spouse to talk with in line, be sure to bring something to read. I even saw some people in line with camp chairs that they picked up and moved when the line moved. I thought that was a great idea, especially if you have a bad back or knees. And remember, you cannot use cell phones at the polls. So plan ahead and keep that in mind when you go.
I want to hear your voting stories. How long did you stand in line and what was your experience?
